In the game Risk, there are countries listed that no longer exist. This is also true in Foer’s novel. This dual narrative tells the story of one American’s search through the Ukraine for the woman who saved his Jewish grandfather during WWII. The search unravels secrets and other histories for all who members of the trip. While it was difficult, at first, to follow narrator Alex’s broken english, this becomes one of the best aspects of the book. Still, I’ve now read enough books about the Holocaust, at least until next year.
